My five classes are studying the seven I AM statements Jesus made in the Gospel of John. If you aren't familiar with them, here they are!
I am the bread of life.
I am the true vine.
I am the good shepherd.
I am the gate for the sheep.
I am the light of the world.
I am the resurrection and the life.
I am the way, the truth, and the life.
I am the true vine.
I am the good shepherd.
I am the gate for the sheep.
I am the light of the world.
I am the resurrection and the life.
I am the way, the truth, and the life.
I gave my students the assignment of coming up with their own I AM statements which would define who they are. Today, I am posting some of them, a combination of middle and high school kids. (There will be more in the near future.) They are brutally honest and all are used with permission; boys in blue and girls in pink.
I am the daughter longing for a relationship with her father.
I am the son of a bad relationship.
I am the boy who seems to be just an athlete.
I am the boy with no true father figure.
I am the girl who can't take her own advice.
I am the girl who wishes people would look at her personality, not her looks.
I am the boy who was hit by reality at an early age.
I am the girl too proud to admit she's wrong.
I am the boy who loves all school subjects.
I am the boy who who wants to stop comparing himself to others.
I am the girl who wants to be a great mom to her future children.
I am the girl who has recovered from being a pathological liar.
I am the girl who is painfully average.
I am the boy relearning how to smile.
I am the boy who walks through life with 'what ifs.'
I am the boy who is figuring life out.
I am the boy everyone underestimates.
I am the boy who doesn't have a place in the world.
I am the son of a heartbroken mother.
I am the daughter of a distant dad.
I am the girl who loves others more than they love me.
I am the girl who just wants to be appreciated- that's all I want.

I am the boy who is fearful of some things.
I am the girl who hides behind a screen.
I am the girl who wishes it was easier to overcome fear.
I am the boy who is afraid of his own strength and anger.
I am the girl who takes care of her mom.
I am the girl who wants to make her mother proud.
I am the sister who wants to see her brother.
God bless,
Steve
