Three Score And Four...

Merry Christmas! I pray this is a wonderful season for your families. It's a sentimental time for us. Today, our mother and father would have celebrated sixty-four years of marriage together. On this day in 1949, Sarah Nelda Chesshir and Roger Wayne Hawley were united in marriage in Nashville, Arkansas. The minister that Sunday evening was my paternal grandfather, Harold E. Hawley. I caught myself being nostalgic each time I heard Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer on the radio almost every day since Thanksgiving. You see, that was in a sense my parents' song as Gene Autry's classic version was recorded that year and dominated the airwaves. It was sung at their 40th anniversary in 1989 as part of the celebration and I picked up a morsel of family history. As kids, we conveniently overlooked Mom and Dad's big day in our excitement over presents and turkey dinners but they were tolerant. It seems so strange now to have a wedding on the biggest holiday of the year but it seemed to fit our folks. Marriage was such an important theme in the scriptures so it felt natural to combine our family beginning with the the world's celebration of the Christ child. If you were friends of our parents, please smile and remember they loved you. And in their honor, we do as well.
Applicable quote of the day:
''Our wedding was many years ago. The celebration continues to this day.''
