The Empire Wok Strikes Back

In one of my entries in 2006, I mentioned a Chinese family that I became acquainted . Tonight's devotional is about the same parents and the three sons they are bringing up. This is from November 2, 2006.

I have become a fan of Chinese take-out food in the last several weeks due to my nighttime schedule and the proximity of the Empire Wok to the Braesridge Apartments. Recently, I mentioned becoming friends with one of the three sons of the owners while waiting for my food. Last night after Bible study, I had pepper steak on my mind so I pulled into my customary parking spot close to the door and walked inside. It was akin to a scene out of Star Wars. The three little boys had just acquired new light saber toy weapons that extended like magic wands and flashed. I asked for the identities of the characters. The older boys were Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi; the one in kindergarten was Luke Skywalker. They let me push the buttons, releasing the sabers to pop out of the handles, extending to a length of three feet (according to a toy website.) I acted surprised and impressed: the trio even told me where these weapons to save us from the enemies of earth can be purchased in Houston. When my food was ready, the father came out and introduced himself, along with his wife. He is Patrick and she is Peggy. She referred to me as 'teacher,' and they seemed happy that I enjoyed playing with their kids. It can't be easy being immigrants, especially running a hit-or-miss business like a restaurant. The kids obviously enjoy being in the vicinity of the folks, just being boys. They are well-adjusted, happy, and unlike their mom and dad, extremely American. It all seems too coincidental to be coincidental. I mean, I like Chinese food and they sell Chinese food. The Chinese culture highly respects teachers and I am a teacher. I work with our Chinese church and this is a Chinese family. I teach kids and they have kids. Maybe the Lord is leading me somewhere. All I have to do is follow the pepper steak!

Applicable quote of the day:
"I just love Chinese food. My favorite dish is number 27."
