Tie Me A River

(Now on sale at Ties 'R' Us!)
The above post is outdated in that I have, as far as I can tell, in excess of 300 ties, with no signs of slowing down. This is from April 18, 2011.

I've mentioned before that I possess in the neighborhood of two hundred ties. People, usually students, just keep giving them to me. When kids ask me what kind of tie I want from them for Christmas, I always try to dissuade them by asking if they would give money to a billionaire who obviously needs no more money. Still, I know it's a compliment and I do love them, both the kids and the ties. Above you see my collection, posed as I did some spring break cleaning. They don't all match my clothes but most of them have a story.

Each day, I pass our smallest students, the pre-k and kindergarten youngsters. They are invariably lined up next to the elementary entrance, waiting their turn for the water fountain or the potty. Several times per week when I venture past this assembling of future teenagers, I receive this identical inquiry: "Does that tie play music?" You see, back in December, I wore my collection of Christmas ties, two of which play a combination of We Wish You A Merry Christmas and Jingle Bells when you squeeze them at the bottom. I demonstrated the musical ties in these childrens' presence and it has remained entrenched in their fascination. I've worn a tie to school every day since August but this is their focus. They don't forget easily, do they? As parents know, that's such a mixed blessing. What we say and what we do does not escape their attention. The Savior defined the kingdom in terms of  belonging to little children. What is it that song says?
''Red and yellow, black and white,
They are precious in His sight."
That's the message these children need to hear every day of their lives. Now if I can just find a tie that plays THAT song!

Applicable quote of the day:
"Neckties satisfy modern man's desire to dress in art."
Harry Anderson

You could make a quilt out of them! I'm sure you could turn one of those ties into a musical tie with the song Jesus Loves the Little Children! There has to be a button with that on it somewhere!

Since I retired I don't wear ties any more. I have kept one just in case, but I hope I don't ever have to use it. Ha.

That's priceless! I wonder if you can have them made into a quilt so you wear all of them. Thanks for sharing this.
