Here's Looking At You, Part 2

Tonight is the second round of my students' answers to the question, 'When I look in the mirror, I see....' We based the discussion on James 1:22-24 which I cited yesterday. Many of you left comments which I posted in class for the kids to read. It means so much that you would take the time and I hope some of you will do so again! Again, the boys are in blue font and the girls are in purple. All are printed with permission.

''When I look in the mirror, I see my murky brown eyes hiding the pain of a broken family. I see my crazy hair that I wish would lie flat for once and try to calm my worried, jumbled thoughts about what will happen today or people I hope will have a good day because they are having such a hard time. I see a girl who wears her uniform with pride because of her dedication to her schoolwork, and the three rings she always wears.One is on her left hand, the fourth finger, where a wedding ring would go, a purity ring to remember her relationship with God. On her right hand, a ring her grandfather gave her to remember her commitment to her family. Finally, a ring around her neck for her responsibilities to her friends. I see a girl who doesn't wear makeup and doesn't think negatively about her appearance. Most of all, I see the bright smile of a young Christian woman.''

A.

''When I look at myself in the mirror, I see a guy who is not good looking and not too confident. But, I also see a guy who is kind hearted. Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. I know there are many things I have to change to improve myself. I also realize that I am a good young man. When I decide to help someone, I will do my best for them.''

S.

"When I look in the mirror, I see a tall girl who is sometimes mean but who is truly kindhearted. I see an athlete who needs to stop being lazy. I see someone who struggles with things but keeps them to herself so others won't look down on her or feel sorry for her. I also see a smart girl who could put in a little more time to have a higher GPA. I see a child who doesn't feel like her parents tell her GOOD JOB! enough. I see someone who is responsible but her dad doesn't think so. I see good people and corrupt people in her life and someone with many friends who love her. I see someone who likes to help others but isn't sure how. I see someone happy with life. I see me.''
A.

"When I look in the mirror, which I hate doing, I can't see inside me. I'm lost. It's like an outer shell that does not say who I am. What I feel inside does not match what I see in the mirror.''
T.

"When I look in the mirror, I see a girl struggling with life. I see someone who has potential and wants to use it but doesn't know how. I see a girl who struggles with trust from being hurt too many times. I see a girl who loves God but doesn't know how to show it. But I also see a girl who has changed. I see a girl independent and a little bit rebellious in personality. I see a confident girl who wants to enjoy life. I see a girl similar to her mom. When I look in the mirror, I don't see my eyes or hair or face; I see my heart and soul. But I'm glad because that's what God sees."

''When I look in the mirror, I see a young man who has made mistakes and one who has betrayed people that he loves more than anyone will ever know and might never get them back because of it. I also see a young man who knows that some of the things he has done in the past might affect him the rest of his life. But, I also see a young man who has found his faith in the Lord and someone who has done all he can to keep that faith. I see a young man who is driven to succeed in getting back the trust of the people he betrayed and showing them the new man in him; a more determined and faithful young man. When I look in the mirror, I see a grateful young man; grateful that the Lord has blessed him with a loving family, great friends, athletic ability with intelligence to accompany it. I see a young man who has vowed to himself and others not to take things for granted again and who is fully set on keeping his promise.''
