My Mother's Voice

My mother died on March 31, 2009. A kinder woman never walked the earth. On the one year anniversary of her death, I had my seniors write their mothers a letter, expressing gratitude for what they have given their children. I explained I wish I could do the same. Some day, they will understand. I wrote the following entry on March 29, 2009, two days before Mom passed away.

Today, as I was doing my ironing for the week, I became very nostalgic for my parents. I turned to my good friend, YouTube, and played several songs that made me think of them: Desperadoes Waiting For A Train (Jerry Jeff Walker) for Dad and Pieces Of April (Three Dog Night) for Mom and Dad as a couple. For Mom, I found Friends With You by John Denver. Here are the words:

What a friend we have in time
Gives us children, makes us wine

Tells us what to take or leave behind

And the gifts of growing old
Are the stories to be told
Of the feelings more precious than gold

Babies days are never long
Mother's laugh is baby's song
Gives us all the hope to carry on

Chorus
Friends I will remember you, think of you
Pray for you
And when another day is through
I'll still be friends with you

Mom used to sing to us when we were little. I remember she always sang this little chorus:
"I love you,
A bushel and a peck
A bushel and a peck
And a hug around the neck."

I wish I could hear her sing it one more time. She hasn't sang in quite awhile. To a child, his mother has the voice of a opera singer. I was blessed with Beverly Sills as my mom.

Applicable quote of the day:
"My mom is a never-ending song in my heart of comfort, happiness, and being. I may sometimes forget the words but I always remember the tune."

What blessed memories. I sing that song to my girls now. I didn't know it when my 3 big kids were little. I think I'll sing it tonight when I put them to bed.
Blessings from GA,
